The Washington Post’s Mark Hicks is calling out the media for letting the whole thing blow up into a full-blown scandal. Hicks says the controversy over Cameron’s remarks on “traditional marriage” has turned into a “huge story,” thanks to “the relentless media blitz” and Cameron’s appearance on the Colbert Report.
Cameron made her remarks in response to the National Organization for Women’s April 19 “Justice for All” rally on the National Mall, where several hundred women gathered to protest the Supreme Court’s decision to grant same-sex marriage rights. Cameron condemned the rally and pledged to support organizations that supported gay and lesbian rights as she said … “We are not going to accept a society that is out there trying to force a minority to live a lifestyle that is not necessarily in alignment with their identity.”
She went on to say that she’s “absolutely comfortable with the idea that being gay doesn’t give a person the right to marry.” But she called for “a societal shift” that would eliminate the idea of heterosexual marriage being “the only relationship that is valid to raise your children with.”
Cameron’s comments drew ire from conservatives, gays and lesbians, and the American Civil Liberties Union, which wrote a letter Thursday to the White House calling her remarks “blatantly discriminatory and harmful” and urging her “to reverse her positions.”
I don’t really know why this has blown up to this extent, except for those who are already convinced that “traditional marriage” is a crock of shit. And for the most part, I don’t understand why the media continues to give a shit,
