Top seed Daniil Medvedev beaten by Nick Kyrgios at US Open
American Nick Kyrgios and Russian Daniil Medvedev came up against each other only once this year and will meet in the second round of the US Open, following their first round encounter. It proved to be another low point for the 22-year-old Medvedev as he fell to Kyrgios 6-2, 7-6 (7-5).
After Medvedev took the first set 6-2, he was only able to hold Kyrgios for 2-4 in the second set, while he also lost the deciding tiebreak.
The young American is one of the favourites to qualify into the second round and reach the third week of the tournament at Flushing Meadows, which is one of the most attractive, for a number of players such as Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and David Ferrer.
After his loss, Medvedev did not comment and could only say that he is “ready next year” when asked about the match.
Nick Kyrgios started well in the first set and he was leading 5-0 as he served for the match. However, before he was finally able to take the second set, he was losing on a set-point.
Medvedev was able to serve for the match and was eventually able to hold Kyrgios to go up 0-1. He eventually made it 2-1. However, the big break came in the third and final set of the match and Medvedev was eventually able to hold Kyrgios to 1-1. The young American tried his maximum on each point to go ahead and eventually lost the match. Medvedev now hopes to go back to the court to improve his game.
However, he will face a fellow countryman, after his victory over the world No.2, Stan Wawrinka, in a third round match and he will play someone ranked No. 3, Tomas Berdych.
In the meantime, Medvedev hopes to improve his level of play.
