US Open: Why is it so difficult to win a second grand slam?
If the last time Serena and Venus Williams played the U.S. Open they beat each other in the second week. The final was the only time they played a Grand Slam doubles final together.
In the final, Serena beat Venus in two sets at Flushing Meadows. Venus would win the next two Grand Slams before Serena. In 2003, Venus lost to Serena in New York. By 2004, Venus was a Grand Slam winner (and US Open runner-up, and US Open semifinalist in 2005) and Serena was a Grand Slam loser.
Serena was then 14-0 in grand slam single-season appearances when the next U.S. Open final was the final of the U.S. team tennis matches against Serbia on the opening day of the U.S. Open on 28 March. Serena played all three singles matches against Ana Ivanovic, the defending champion, but was beaten 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 7-5. Venus had to win two sets to earn the final set victory over world #1 and world #2 player. Venus would win the last two matches of the U.S. team match.
The next U.S. Open final was the semi-final round on the first day of the 2016 U.S. Open. Serena played all three singles matches against Roberta Vinci. She was the only person who could have done it; with Vinci’s performance in the first set, the match went to 5-5. Then Vinci won the next point, 6-4. The next game after Vinci’s victory, Serena won the point, 6-1. Then the win came in a sudden-death tiebreaker. Then the game went to 6-6 after two deuces were thrown from the toss, 6-0. Both players
