Ranked choice election process gains popularity nationwide

The U.S. presidential election is approaching, and voters are eagerly awaiting a say in the choices for the presidency that will be made. For many, this process is becoming routine at this election’s doorstep.

At this time each year, millions of Americans fill out voter registration cards, head to voting booths and cast their ballots for president and the candidates they’d like to see get elected. Many of those ballots are then submitted to their state’s officials who count the votes and tabulate the results. Some of these votes are then tabulated using a process called Instant Runoff Voting.

In other words, the process of having a say in the choice for president has become an everyday occurrence in this country.

In 2016, when candidates compete in the Democratic debates, hundreds of thousands of people will go to their polling locations as part of what is called a voter registration drive or a drive to vote.

In Iowa’s Hawkeye State, which has two of the three electoral college votes in the nation, more than 70,000 voters signed up for the Hawkeye State Voter Registration Program – the first time Hawkeye State voters turned in over 40,000 voter registration forms in just two short months. In all, nearly 1-in-6 Iowa voters turned in voter registration forms.

The Iowa Department of Human Services, which also runs the Iowa Voter Registration Program, reports that
