Three people in critical condition after high-speed chase in south Florida ends with fatal injuries

Suspect in high-speed chase was previously charged with grand theft, child cruelty and drug possession

Three people are in critical condition after a vehicle chase in south Florida ended with fatal injuries.

The three were involved in a high-speed chase on I-75 south of Stuart that began when a man driving a truck with Florida tags tried to pass a black Toyota car that was on the highway and didn’t stop. The driver of the Toyota stopped but got out and was taken down by law enforcement, who detained him and his passenger.

The Florida Highway Patrol said the driver of the truck followed the Toyota and tried to force the car off the road, trying to pass it. After the driver of the Toyota stopped, the man on the highway stopped following to try and get the Toyota driver to get off of the road.

When the man in the truck ran a red light a short time later, the driver of the Toyota swerved and almost struck a squad car but was able to slow down. The suspect in the truck, who is described as a white man with short, black hair, was eventually taken into custody and led away by officers.

The suspected man’s truck is described as a black Dodge with Florida tags. The Toyota has Florida plates.

The man arrested at the scene earlier had warrants charging him with grand theft from two victims in Pasco County, and had been charged with resisting an officer without violence following a high-speed chase, according to court records.

On Thursday, state troopers chased the suspect’s pickup truck after allegedly not stopping at a stop sign south of Stuart. The chase ended in the parking lot of a fast-food restaurant on U.S. 1 after the driver ran out a back door of the truck and ran about 30 yards along the highway, authorities said.

The person taken into custody by the trooper was transported to nearby Lake Butler, officials said. He was taken to the Jackson Memorial Hospital in Tallahassee with life-threatening injuries.

Troopers told the Tallahassee Democrat they believe they were pursuing a stolen vehicle, which has not been found.

A passenger in the Toyota, who was wounded in the head and was taken to Tallahassee Memorial Hospital, is listed in critical condition.
